Re: The ultimate orb solution, at last.

Justice!

Ah, that's great news! Well, sorry that was frustrating, but it was good to go through and will make a lot of great inputs for the documentation.

Now I just need to poke the hardware folks and ask where our boards are!

Re: The ultimate orb solution, at last.

OK, Ron, something new to try REAL QUICK (don't take much time on this!). Here are new zip files for library and sketches. I'm a little new at distributing Arduino software, so I'm trying a slightly different approach here (only including source files for sketches, but including the precompiled libr...

Re: The ultimate orb solution, at last.

Ron, take some time off! :D Actually, let me recreate my local orb programs to be SpaceOrb specific again and send you the new versions; maybe something was mid-edit when I uploaded those old ones. They don't look bad "by eye", but the "CBNTFT? FR? P@r@rmssvzBcCcCcC" is a SpaceBall4000 setup string,...

Re: The ultimate orb solution, at last.
I followed your instructions and opened the Orb1 (I didn’t upload it to the Arduino board, Should I?)
Ah! I'm sorry--yes, that's what I meant: upload it to the Arduino. The Arduino editor software doesn't actually run anything by itself; it's only interesting if you upload to the orb....

Re: The ultimate orb solution, at last.

Hmm, some discouragement, but that's progress actually. If it showed up as UsbJoystick and had all axes/buttons, that means the USB side of things was working, which is really good news (the USB tends to be a "it works or it doesn't" proposition). Now we just need to get the serial side sorted; it m...

Re: The ultimate orb solution, at last.

(heh--I've been checking back all day hoping for good news from Ron...) Also, if we put together a guide, starting with an existing Arduino sketch like "blink the LED" or something might get people the idea of uploading and running stuff on the Arduino before jumping into orb stuff. or not. Just a t...

Re: The ultimate orb solution, at last.

Ron-- Sorry to not get back to you quickly (darn time zone difference). I think by default the Arduino software stores sketches in My Documents\Arduino, which is where the sketches should go (ie "My Documents\Arduino\HidSporb"). That's where it is on my installation. Hopefully that does it. Good poi...

Re: The ultimate orb solution, at last.

Go Ron go! Heh.
Don’t you think programming the Arduino with your first “hidsporb” (post Jan.11) would be better to check if my Orbshield works?
It should work without you having to muck with changing the software; it won't have the keyboard/mouse bindings, but those are merely pleasa...

Re: The ultimate orb solution, at last.

Looking good, Ron! I'm pretty excited about this. Good point on the resistors and the USB--I'll have to watch for that on the other shields. If you use the existing download files from the orbduino site, be warned that the "Hidsporb" sketch currently sets it us as a SpaceBall4000, which will NOT tra...

Re: The ultimate orb solution, at last.

Oh, and as an addendum: When folks who build/get their boards get their orbs working... you owe it to yourself to download Google Earth and play. Works like a champ: Tools, Options, Non-Mouse Controller->Enable Controller. Just spent some time flying around a virtual New York City with 3D buildings-...

Re: The ultimate orb solution, at last.

Okay, busyish weekend in OrbDuino-land! (heh). 1) Okay, I think bindings are basically done; maybe some tweakings. I have tweaked things so that bindings take place in PROGMEM (flash memory) so we've got plenty of SRAM, or so it seems. To do bindings, you just create some structures, and set them. H...

Re: The ultimate orb solution, at last.

Ah sure, makes sense.

Of note: when I made my board, I never DID get the laser printer to accept paper from the external feed (or other tray) and wound up using a photocopier to copy the pattern onto my magazine paper for toner transfer. Worked okay, but not quite as nice.

Re: The ultimate orb solution, at last.

Ron-- Those should be fine (removing traces from the arduino to the DIP). If you do that, you can clean up the ground trace a bit if you want (on the "Max233" side of the DIP), but make sure it still connects to what it's supposed to connect to. I will post the new two-sided board soon; it's a bit m...

Re: The ultimate orb solution, at last.

Totally minor updates:

1) Order for 1 batch of the PCBs is in, should be a week or so--then we see if I've screwed something up with the redesign.

2) The AVR USB chips have half the SRAM of the Arduino, so I'm still happy with choice of platform (although I ordered one just to see).

Re: The ultimate orb solution, at last.

Hmm, very interesting. It might be a scaling thing (PDF programs are bad about "print to fit"). I don't THINK this will be the case, but check the A4/Letter thing (I'm pretty sure it was letter, but since I am in the UK and ran into that problem...) If you want to recreate it, try downloading the ea...
