Re: New run of orbshields

...this is what I'd rather see: Second big adjustment was evening out the height around the PCB on my stenciling "board" (a cutting board with pieces of perfboard arranged around the central PCB). This made a bigger difference than I had imagined it would. So a...

Re: New run of orbshields

Well, did a little experiment today; made 4 boards and took stencil vs finished. I'd thought stenciling was more permissive with reflow, but it was really clear: if I nailed the stencil, I got a good board, but if it was off just a bit, I needed rework. For example, this paste, which missed the pads...

Re: New run of orbshields

When the bridges happen, they always are "up the legs" a little, which is what made me wonder if I was just applying too much. I may well be using a different solder paste; I wasn't particularly well-informed when I bought it (http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/search/productdetail.jsp?SKU=149968; it's also ...

Re: New run of orbshields

Actually, I'll say this: that cheap little hot-air rework station does a decent job of pulling the chips off with a little bit of time. I was able to fix all the problems--there just shouldn't be problems (and I'm not convinced about the security of the USB connectors; I'll feel better when I...

Re: New run of orbshields

Oof, okay. Unless I can do something about my process, this is going to be unsustainable :) It's taken me hours to do... five. Each one required substantial rework--STILL bridges on the 32u4 (!) and lots of problems with that old USB connector; had to remove/replace them a few times (one board turne...

Re: New run of orbshields

I would just like to say, at this point in my work day, having gotten only one built so far, that I will destroy whoever designed that USB connector.

That is all.

Re: New run of orbshields

I'll tell you after this weekend (there's still a chance these don't work; I added a couple of testing ports since the last revision, which is funny because I may not even use them since no one seems to be able to tell me why my boundary scan isn't working). I'm going to build a handful and then sav...

Re: New run of orbshields

Not a dumb question about the driver. You don't actually need a driver for it to work like a HID device, just to use the Arduino environment and reprogram it--but that's the answer actually. Point it at the .inf file in the hardware/orbotron directory. Now, one thing I can't check is if the .inf is ...

Re: http://spacemice.wikidot.com/

Nice, Teh! Makes my little collection of SpaceOrb/4000/5000/SpaceMouse/3003? look paltry in comparison. The new board does work with the SpaceOrb 360, 4000FLX, 5000, and Magellan SpaceMouse... I don't think I got the 3003 (I think that's the number) working, but that's OK; it's the least interesting...

Re: New run of orbshields

Well, the boards are in town... but I can't get them yet. Evidently they triggered import and customs charges... equal to the amount I paid for the boards. AND equal to the amount I paid for "rush shipping". So much for cheap overseas production; I would have been better off using my local guys afte...

Re: New run of orbshields

It's interesting, because web searching has shown a lot of forum threads about how solder-mask on fine pitches is LESS useful and a lot of people don't seem to recommend it! Not what I expected. More research to be done...

Re: New run of orbshields
? AFAIK, footprints don't include solder masks.
Fair point (I wasn't sure; never mistake me for someone who knows what I'm doing so much as someone who just doesn't know when he's beat...). The design rules I have are probably overly conservative since I set them to be very...

Re: New run of orbshields

Yeah, the 6-pin header is ISP only. The UsbTinyISP project was simple enough I understood it, and full JTAG support was confusing at the time (I'm starting to learn as I can see the writing on the wall for moving toward ARM). I'm not sure how well the AVRs support JTAG to be honest (although I did f...
